Essay writing…some guidance

Now this post isn’t necessarily geography related but is more concerned with the particular skill of essay writing (which many geographers have to master).

A recent article in the Guardian ‘Essay writing trips ups students‘ highlights that one of the key skills students still struggle with is essay writing. The article describes some experiences of students, the problems they face, and some of the help they have recieved to overcome this issue.

In teaching undergraduates I have created two short guidance documents, the first on essay writing  and the second on critical thinking skills (the key to a successful essay is often to display evidence of critical thinking).

This post really is to provide a link to these documents should anyone feel they would find them useful in their teaching, or as a student, in their writing.

The other key skill I find students struggle with is referencing. I will post my ‘Referencing guide for beginners’ in the near future.
